The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Dnieper River near Kherson was destroyed by Russian strikes and is beyond repair, Ukrainian energy company Ukrhydroenergo confirmed on Tuesday.
The explosion caused irreparable damage to the facility's equipment, rendering restoration impossible, according to Ukrhydroenergo, which said that water levels in the Kakhovka reservoir are rapidly decreasing. Further analysis is being conducted to determine the extent of destruction and the impact on water volume and speed, as the reservoir is expected to disappear within the next four days.
The explosion, which resulted in critical damage to the dam, has led to uncontrolled water discharge, causing flooding downstream and prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to convene an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.
