King Charles III of the United Kingdom was proclaimed the nation's new monarch in a ceremony of the country's Accession Council, which was, for the first time in history, televised.
Charles succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled the kingdom for 70 years and 214 days, marking the longest reign of any British monarch before her.
In his speech on Saturday, the King honored his departed mother for her "lifelong love" and "selfless service." "In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these Islands and of the Commonwealth Realms and Territories throughout the world," the King promised.
