United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on Tuesday for an independent investigation into reports that Hamas executed six Israeli hostages, one of whom also had American citizenship. The hostages were allegedly on a list of those expected to be released by Hamas as part of a ceasefire deal and their deaths sparked mass protests in Israel.
"We are horrified by reports that Palestinian armed groups summarily executed six Israeli hostages, which would constitute a war crime," The UN Human Rights office said. Turk called for an "independent, impartial and transparent investigation and for perpetrators to be held to account."
