The United Nations is 'concerned' over the impact the recent tariffs and other trade restrictions might have on the global economy, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, said on Monday.
"We are obviously concerned about the impact that the growing trade restriction measures can have on the global economy, particularly in developing countries and places where there's a vulnerable population. As you know, the global economy is already in a low-growth context," Dujarric stated during a daily press briefing, noting that although trade restrictions are on the rise, most global trade still follows the rules of the World Trade Organization.
United States President Donald Trump warned last week that he will impose tariffs on the European Union, reportedly considering a 10% tariff. He previously imposed tariffs on imports from Canada, China and initially on Mexico, before postponing the tariffs on Mexican goods for a month.
