The United Nations General Assembly adopted on Tuesday a draft resolution introduced by Egypt, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution was supported by 153 countries. Meanwhile, 10 countries, including the United States and Israel, were against it, while 23 abstained from voting. Previously, both the US and Austria's amendments to the draft resolution failed to garner enough support.

Egypt's UN representative Osama Abdel Khalek Mahmoud, who presented the resolution, called it "simple, clear and explicit." Earlier, another draft resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire was vetoed by Washington during a UN Security Council session.
