The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigation found that the country's top mobile carriers failed to protect their customers' real-time location data, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
Now, the FCC is reportedly seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages from AT&T Inc., Sprint Corp., T-Mobile US Inc., and Verizon Communications Inc.. The regulator went after the companies when they continued sharing their customers' data even after agreeing to cease the practice, people close to the matter told the newspaper.
However, the fines sought by the FCC are not final, as carriers can still pursue reduced penalties or attempt to have them dropped completely.
