The United States military was behind the Baghdad International Airport attack which killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, the Pentagon confirmed.
"At the direction of the President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force," according to the Pentagon statement.
Soleimani was "actively developing plans to attack American diplomats," it added, as well as the US embassy attack in Baghdad and the strike that killed a US contractor in Iraq before that.
