US envoy hails progress in Taliban negotiations

United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad stated that "significant progress" has been made in talks with the Taliban. "After six days in Doha, I'm headed to Afghanistan for consultations. Meetings here were more productive than they have been in the past. We made significant progress on vital issues," Khalilzad said.

"Will build on the momentum and resume talks shortly. We have a number of issues left to work out. Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, and 'everything' must include an intra-Afghan dialogue and comprehensive ceasefire," the representative warned. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid agreed there was progress in efforts to end the 17-year war, but added that "since issues are of critical nature and need comprehensive discussions, it was decided that talks about unsolved matters will resume in similar future meetings."
