US House votes against Johnson's stopgap bill

EPA-EFE/WILL OLIVER

The United States House of Representatives failed to approve the stopgap bill for short-term government funding tabled by Speaker Mike Johnson.

The proposal received 202 votes in favor. On the other hand, 220 House Representatives, including several from the Republican Party, did not support it. The bill was pulled from the vote several times due to some internal disagreements among GOP members, such as on the part of the document that stipulates proof of citizenship to vote in elections.

If a stopgap bill is not approved soon, the US government will shut down on October 1.
