The United States House of Representatives voted on Tuesday in motion to remove Kevin McCarthy as its speaker in the first event of that sort in the country's history.
The request to vote on the removal, filed by Matt Gaetz, the member of the House from Florida's 1st district, received 216 in favor and 210 against. Eight Republicans voted against their party fellow McCarthy.
With the Office of the Speaker now vacant, a temporary replacement is expected to take the position. According to the rules introduced in 2003, they should be picked from the list of potential stand-ins if needed. The names on McCarthy's list are still unknown.
