United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday that Washington decided to impose sanctions on several Iranian officials over the "wrongful" arrest of US citizens and violations of human rights, after five Americans were released from Iranian prisons.

In particular, the US administration will impose sanctions on the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) because of its implication in the detention of US nationals. Also, the sanctions will target former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for providing financial support to MOIS.

Blinken also said that the US is planning to impose visa restrictions on three Iranian government officials suspected "to be responsible for or complicit in serious abuses or violations of human rights, as well as hostage-taking or wrongful, arbitrary, or otherwise unjust detention of U.S. and foreign nationals."
