Officials from the United States and Iran held indirect talks in Oman this week, Axios reported. The purpose of the talks was to avoid "escalating regional attacks," according to people familiar with the matter.
The discussions reportedly involved National Security Council Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk (pictured) and Deputy Special Envoy for Iran Abram Paley. The sources added that the talks focused on "clarifying the consequences of actions by Iran and its proxies in the region and to discuss US concerns regarding the status of Iran's nuclear program." They follow a series of strikes exchanged between Israel and Iran in April.
