The United States and Japan have been preparing for a potential conflict with China over Taiwan since 2019, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. A number of anonymous sources said the preparations included "top-secret tabletop war games," as well as joint drills in the South China and East China seas, officially labeled as "disaster relief training."

According to the report, the two countries aim to "create an integrated war plan for Taiwan" as officials develop strategies on the role Japan could play in a possible conflict. China previously held military exercises during a meeting between the Taiwanese president and a US delegation. Beijing also blasted Washington after the Navy warship USS John S. McCain's transit through the Taiwan Strait in April.
