Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States rose by 315,000 in August, the country's Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed in its latest report published on Friday. Although the figure was lower compared to the July reading, it still managed to slightly beat market estimates.
The unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points from the previous month, reaching 3.7% in August. The labor force participation rate was 0.3 percentage points up, standing at 62.4% The professional and business services sector saw the biggest expansion in the workforce, with 68,000 jobs gained. The health care sector employment rose by 48,000, followed by the retail trade sector which added 44,000 jobs.
Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by $0.10 or 0.3% from July to reach $32.36 in August, representing an annual increase of 5.2%.
