United States National Security Council Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell told reporters during the inaugural session of the Nuclear Consultative Group on Tuesday that the US nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine is currently making a port call in Busan "for the first time in decades."
The move demonstrates Washington's extended deterrence commitment to South Korea, Campbell stressed.
North Korea previously denounced the United States' plan to deploy the submarine to the Korean Peninsula "for the first time since 1981," warning that it could "incite the worst crisis of nuclear conflict in practice." In April, US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol signed the declaration aimed at deterring nuclear threats from North Korea.
