The United States Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed on Thursday sanctions on 13 individuals and entities that are believed to be sponsoring the Houthi movement in Yemen with "tens of millions of dollars."
OFAC said that "since October, the Houthis have conducted multiple unprovoked missiles and drone attacks threatening civilian infrastructure in Israel and commercial shipping operating in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden." Moreover, the US agency pointed out that the sanctioned groups are part of a "complex network" that created funds "from the sale and shipment of Iranian commodities, backed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF)."
Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian E. Nelson commented that targeting these entities helps in dismantling financial facilitation in the region that aim for "destabilizing activities." "The Houthis continue to receive funding and support from Iran," Nelson noted.
