US says Russia discussed using nuclear arms - report

EPA-EFE/RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY PRESS SERVICE

Russian military leaders had a discussion on using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing multiple senior United States officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was not present during the alleged talks. According to US officials, the intelligence regarding the meeting was spread in the US government in mid-October. They did not, however, get into details about how Moscow potentially planned to use these weapons.

Although the information raised alarm among the Biden administration, Washington previously stated that, so far, it has not seen any indications of Russia actively moving towards such a scenario. Nevertheless, the US noted that it is still following the situation closely.
