The United States wants to rejoin the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Wall Street Journal said Monday, citing a document delivered to Director-General Audry Azoulay pursuing readmission as soon as next month.
The move is an effort to cope with China's growing global influence. Moreover, the Biden administration will request $150 million from Congress for fiscal 2024 to pay UNESCO until the country's membership is fully settled. Currently, the US owes UNESCO $619 million.
In this way, the US is reversing the policy of former President Donald Trump, who, during his administration, withdrew from the organization, citing the need for revisions, as well as its continued anti-Israel bias.
