The United States government is attempting to persuade its allies and their internet providers not to use Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd's telecommunications equipment, the Wall Street Journal reported. Washington is worried about the possible security risks posed by the use of China's technology, especially the parts that will be used to set up and run the future 5G networks.
American officials shared their concerns on the telecom network vulnerabilities with the representatives of allied countries such as Germany and Japan, where the use of Huawei equipment is widespread, the newspaper wrote citing sources close to the matter.
"We engage with countries around the world about our concerns regarding cyber threats in telecommunications infrastructure. As they’re looking to move to 5G, we remind them of those concerns. There are additional complexities to 5G networks that make them more vulnerable to cyber attacks," a US official told the WSJ.
