Virus cases up by record 40,347 in China, protests spread

The number of new coronavirus infections in China rose by 40,347, the country's health authorities reported on Monday.

The latest figure represents another daily record for China, with 3,822 symptomatic and 36,525 asymptomatic cases documented over the previous 24 hours. There were no reported COVID-19-caused deaths in the same timeframe.

Meanwhile, protests over the government's coronavirus restrictions continued throughout the country, with demonstrators gathering in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Wuhan. Some protesters explicitly called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to resign, according to western media reports.
