Walmart sues US government in opioid case

Walmart filed a lawsuit against United States Attorney General William Barr, the Justice Department (DoJ), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the agency's administrator Timothy Shea, saying the government is attempting to blame it for "bad prescriptions" that are being written by medics because of DEA and state policies.

"In the shadow of their own profound failures, DoJ and DEA now seek to retroactively impose on pharmacists and pharmacies unworkable requirements that are not found in any law and go beyond what pharmacists are trained and licensed to perform," the lawsuit said.

The action by Walmart comes as it is facing lawsuits from local authorities in the US which claim the retailer is contributing to the opioid crisis.
