United States National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan confirmed on Friday that Washington agreed to provide Ukraine with cluster munition to help the conflict-hit country repel Russia's military operation.
Speaking at the White House's press conference, Sullivan insisted that the US bases the nature of its aid on "Ukraine's need on the ground" and that "artillery is at the core of this conflict," adding that Russia has been using cluster munition since its operation began. Still, he noted that the munition the US will send to Ukraine will have dead rates of 2.5%, which is "far below what Russia is doing."
Sullivan noted that Biden promised at the beginning of his term that the US under him will "revitalize our alliances" in order to "meet the great challenges of our time." He underscored that Russian President Vladimir Putin expected "that NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] would break," but that the alliance is now "stronger" and "larger than ever."
