Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed on Sunday that Beijing wants what he described as a peaceful unification with Taiwan but does not rule out using force if needed.
"Resolving the Taiwan issue is the Chinese people's own matter," Xi stressed in his opening speech of China's Communist Party's (CCP) 20th congress, at which he is expected to extend his tenure by another, the third term. He added his country will soon present a plan for solving the matter and "firmly grasp the dominance and initiative of cross-Strait relations."
Xi also talked about the country's economy and warned about the hardships it may experience as a result of global instability. "Be ready to withstand high winds, choppy waters, and even dangerous storms," he said.
