Zelensky: EC decision 'victory for Ukraine'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that the European Council's decision to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova is "a victory" for his country and the European Union.

"I thank everyone who worked for this to happen and everyone who helped. I congratulate every Ukrainian on this day," Zelensky posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. In addition, Moldovan President Maia Sandu thanked the EC for its "support and faith," adding that her country "turns a new page today with the EU's go-ahead for accession talks."

Previously, EC President Charles Michel announced that the institution decided to start accession negotiations with Kiev and Chisinau.
