Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed on Thursday that the European Union and his country will sign a security agreement that will bring the two parties closer to their "historic goal of peace and prosperity in our common European home."

"This agreement will enshrine the commitment of all 27 Member States to provide Ukraine with extensive support, regardless of any internal institutional changes," Zelensky said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, adding that he will attend a European Council's meeting in Brussels.

On Tuesday, the EU announced that it had started formal accession negotiations with Ukraine, two years after the war-torn country was approved as a candidate for EU membership.
