Consumer prices in Japan rise 0.6% YoY in April

Consumer prices in Japan were 0.6% higher in April before seasonal adjustment, compared to the same month a year ago, the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said on Friday. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell 0.4% from March's value to 100.9, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the release said.

Excluding fresh food and energy, prices were up 0.4% year over year, and virtually unchanged on a monthly basis. Food prices increased 0.7% compared to April 2017, while they fell 1% compared to the previous month. Housing prices decreased only 0.2% on an annual basis. Prices of fuel, light and water charges advanced 3.6% from April last year, the report said. Medical care was 1.9% more expensive from a year ago.

Growth in prices of goods contributed more than the services, with a rise of 1%, while prices of services were only 0.3% higher year over year.
