Europe ends higher on German govt talks breakthrough

Markets in Europe closed with gains and the euro traded at three-year highs on Friday as investors digested reports that the leaders of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSS) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) reached a breakthrough in talks to form a government.

The DAX rose 0.32%. Prosieben led the gains as the broadcaster's stock jumped 3.11%.

The FTSE 100 closed 0.20% in the green. GKN pushed the index higher as its stock soared 26.24% after the engineering company rejected a £7 billion takeover bid from Melrose.

The CAC 40 climbed 0.52%. The best performance was recorded by Publicis which added 1.86%.

The euro gained 0.83% against the dollar to go for 1.2131 at 5:40 pm CET, marking the currency's highest level compared to the greenback since late 2014.
