Eurozone employment up 0.4% in Q1

The number of employed people in the Eurozone as well as in the whole of the European Union rose 0.4% in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the previous three-month period, according to a report published on Wednesday by Eurostat, EU's statistical office. On an annual basis, employment increased by 1.4% during the first quarter for the euro area as well as the EU28. However, annual rates of employment growth decelerated from the previous quarter, when they stood at 1.6% for the Eurozone and 1.5% for the EU.

According to the report, there were 237.9 million employed men and women in the whole of the EU in the first quarter of 2018, of which 157.2 million were in the euro area. Meanwhile, the largest employment growth was recorded in Romania (1.9%), Malta (1.3%), Portugal, Luxembourg and Croatia (1.0%). The only decrease in the number of employed was seen in Estonia (1.4%), while employment remained stable in Bulgaria and Lithuania.
