Iraq elects pro-Iran parliament speaker

Iraqi parliamentarians elected 37-year-old Mahammed al-Halbusi to the position of speaker on Saturday, AFP reported. Al-Halbusi was the candidate of pro-Iranian bloc in Iraq's legislative body, which is led by the Conquest Alliance.

Previously, the newly-elected speaker headed Anbar province, which is mostly inhabited by Sunni Muslims. According to Iraq law, the speaker is always elected among Sunnis, the prime minister should be Shia and the president a Kurd.

The election will enable Iraq to bring a political deadlock, which has been ongoing since the country's election in May, to a halt. Iran congratulated Baghdad on the speaker election and stated it was a good step forward that should help elect a new government.
