Labor union says Ford to terminate 1,150 UK jobs

Shop stewards in Ford Motor Co.'s factories in Britain were told by management that almost one thousand positions would be slashed at the Bridgend facility in South Wales, Unite announced on Friday and vowed to fight for workers. The trade union said it is against compulsory redundancies and that a total of 1,150 jobs are set to be lost, where the remainder would be truck drivers.

The reduction in headcount at the engine factory is planned to be implemented in two stages in two years, said Des Quinn, who is responsible for the automotive sector. He added there would be "grave implications for the Welsh economy and the supply chain" and promised a fight for the town's "viable future." The national officer acknowledged "challenging market conditions" in the automotive segment and Brexit uncertainty and added the United Kingdom's government has no "coherent industrial strategy."

Ford yesterday unveiled a cost-cutting strategy which would impact thousands of factory workers in Europe, but didn't single out Bridgend.
