Merkel demands answers from Moscow on Skripal attack

Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel spoke to the British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday about the indications of Russian involvement in the poisoning of the former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter earlier in March. The Chancellor condemned the attack "in the sharpest manner" and warned that Berlin takes London's claims of Russian responsibility "extraordinarily seriously."

Merkel demanded that Russia provides the UK with "quick answers to the legitimate questions" and make its chemical weapons program transparent to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

On Monday, Theresa May stated that the evidence found in the investigation of the poisoning of Skripal indicates that Russian involvement is "highly likely." Moscow has sought concrete evidence to support these claims before it can respond and called the accusations an "unscrupulous attempt to discredit Russia."
