Moscow demands 'clear explanation' of lawyer charges

Moscow demanded a "clear explanation" from the United States over the charges brought against Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya recently, according to various media reports on Friday.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday that Russia expects "a clear and articulate explanation" of the charges from Washington. She added that "criminal cases based on unclear claims" against United States-based Russians have become a "habit" for the US justice system. She further noted that it seemed that Washington was seeking "revenge" against Veselnitskaya.

Veselnitskaya, who took part in the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner, was charged with obstruction of justice by US authorities in New York on Tuesday. She allegedly tried to stop the Department of Justice's civil fraud probe involving a Russian entrepreneur and his investment firm. Although the case is reportedly unrelated to her participation in the Trump Tower meeting, US media noted that her indictment demonstrated her close connections to Russian officials.
