Moscow: OPCW confirmed Syria eliminated chemical weapons

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed that Syria has eliminated its chemical weapons stockpiles, Russian media quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.

"Chemical weapons in Syria were destroyed. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has verified this fact… Chemical weapons in Syria are used by extremists and militants. This is a proven fact and every time, when yet another settlement, another town is liberated by the Syrian army, the servicemen find depots with chemicals there. This has been proven by life, this has been proven by facts," Zakharova told Rossiya-1 TV channel.

Zakharova added that, because there are a lot of different chemical weapons in Syria, Russia sent a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to establish a mechanism to investigate the origin of these weapons but was blocked by a group of states led by the US. Her comments come after reports that the OPCW experts arrived in Syria to investigate the alleged chemical attack in Douma that prompted US, Britain and France to launch airstrikes against the Syrian regime.
