Lavrov: US-Russia war would be global disaster

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned on Monday that if it came to a war between the United States and Russia, it would have "disastrous consequences for humanity" as nuclear wars can have no winners and therefore, "should never be unleashed."

The Russian top diplomat pointed out that Washington's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) could "harm international security and strategic stability" and noted that Moscow is still open to working on the preservation of the INF treaty in case "there are still forces" in the US that wish to do so. Speaking in an interview with Sputnik, Lavrov insisted Russia is "not interested in an arms race and new 'missile crises'" but stressed that Moscow will respond in case the US deploys new missiles.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated it will pull out from the nuclear treaty from 1987 by February unless Russia begins complying with the agreement. US President Donald Trump first announced Washington's intension to leave the INF Treaty in October as a result of Moscow's alleged violations of the truce, while his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin warned such a move could endanger global security.
