Pompeo: US to keep fighting ISIS despite Syria withdrawal

United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo stressed on Thursday that the American troops will continue their fight against the militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), despite confirming that the US will withdraw its troops from Syria. Speaking at a press conference after meeting with Egyptian leaders in Cairo, Pompeo stressed that the US remains a steadfast partner in the Middle East.

"The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real. ISIS continues, we fight them in many regions around the country. We're going to do it, in a way, in one particular place — Syria — differently. The United States' decision, President [Donald] Trump's decision, to withdraw our troops has been made. We will do that," Pompeo stated as resumed his nine-nation tour of the Middle East.

Earlier, Pompeo tweeted that his meeting with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (pictured right) was "productive," and expressed his country's solidarity with Egypt on matters of religious freedom protections and the fight against terrorism. Before visiting Egypt, Pompeo made stops in Iraq and Jordan, while he will travel next to the Gulf Arab states of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait, in an effort to reassure region's leaders about the US intention to keep up its fight against terrorism.
