Russia has secretly provided foreign political parties and candidates with a total of $300 million since 2014, media reported on Tuesday citing a declassified United States intelligence assessment.
According to a senior US official, Washington "assesses that these are minimum figures and that Russia likely has transferred additional funds covertly in cases that have gone undetected" and claimed Moscow financed political parties in over 20 countries.
The US also noted it informed foreign political parties that Washington will expose them if they find out they are covertly accepting Russian money. Washington also stressed it briefed other countries' governments on how to counter Russia's actions.
