Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter removed former United States President Donald Trump from Illinois' Republican presidential primary ballot because of his actions related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, with the attack possibly amounting to an insurrection.
Porter delayed her ruling from taking effect until Friday, giving Trump time to appeal the decision in Illinois state courts. The judge took the side of Illinois voters who wished to see the former president removed from the state's March 19 primary ballot, with the advocacy group Free Speech For People praising the decision.
The judge wrote in the ruling that her decision "could not be the ultimate outcome," as the higher courts will have the final say in the matter. Illinois became the third state to kick the former president off the ballot.
