European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday, lauded the European Union's agreement on a new sanctions package against Russia, which includes a ban on imports of Russian primary aluminum.
"The EU is clamping down even harder on circumvention by targeting more vessels in Putin’s shadow fleet and imposing new import and export bans. We are committed to keeping up the pressure on the Kremlin," von der Leyen wrote in a statement on X.
Russia's aluminum accounts for approximately 6% of the European Union's total imports, a figure that has steadily declined in recent years as the bloc seeks to reduce its reliance on Russian suppliers.
