Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Tuesday that he agreed to remove "temporarily" the 25% tax on electricity exports to the United States, particularly Minnesota, New York, and Michigan, after talking with United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and agreeing to meet on March 13 in Washington.
"With any negotiation that we have, there is a point that both parties are heated, and the temperature needs to come down, and I thought this was the right decision. They understand how serious we are about the electricity and tariffs, and rather than going back and forth and having threats to each other, we have both agreed to let cooler heads prevail. We need to sit down and move this forward," Ford told reporters.
Ford stated that Lutnick offered an "olive branch" and offered a meeting in Washington, which the Ontario premier said he will attend with Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
