Pelosi: NAFTA should stay trilateral deal

House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Friday that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) should remain a trilateral agreement as the United States and Canada continue negotiations on overhauling the trade deal. "I think it should be trilateral," she told reporters as it would not be "in the interest of this hemisphere" to turn NAFTA into a bilateral deal between just Mexico and the US.

As talks with Ottawa continue, Mexico said earlier this week it is ready to sign a bilateral trade deal with the US, after managing to secure an agreement last month. Meanwhile, Canada could miss its deadline on NAFTA if an adequate deal is not reached, a senior Canadian official reportedly explained.

Pelosi could become next Speaker of the House if Democrats win this November's midterm elections.
