Retired Austrian colonel arrested as alleged Russian spy

A retired Austrian colonel suspected of spying for Russia for more than twenty years was arrested yesterday by the Austrian intelligence services, Austrian Defense Ministry announced on Friday. The 70-year-old former military officer is believed to have transferred classified information about the migration crisis, the Austrian military aircraft and artillery systems to Russian military intelligence services since the late 1990s. The colonel who has been living in Salzburg reportedly received 300,000 euros for leaking information.

Austrian Defense Minister Mario Kunasek (pictured) said that he will summon Russia's military attache over the charges brought against the colonel. "Spying against a neutral country is unacceptable," Kunasek stated.
