Trump continues push for NATO defense spending increase

United States President Donald Trump continued on Twitter his campaign to get NATO member states to increase their defense spending, warning that European borders are not safe enough. "Billions of additional dollars are being spent by NATO countries since my visit last year, at my request, but it isn’t nearly enough. U.S. spends too much. Europe’s borders are BAD! Pipeline dollars to Russia are not acceptable!" Trump said.

The US president is in Europe for a NATO summit and talks with European Union leaders. Earlier on Wednesday, he slammed Germany for its agreement with Russia involving the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, claiming Germany will ultimately have "70% of its territory controlled by Russia." German Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed his comments, as well as his criticism of Berlin's NATO contributions, saying that Germany is the second largest provider of troops to the alliance.
