Trump lawyer: Sessions leaving won't affect Mueller probe

The resignation of now former Attorney General Jeff Sessions won't affect the investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, President Donald Trump's lawyer Jay Sekulow said on Thursday. Speaking on his radio show, Sekulow stated there will be "no effect day-to-day" on the Russia probe while Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker is in charge. He added that Whitaker is "very smart" and highly qualified for the job.

Earlier, it was reported Sessions wrote in his resignation letter that he is stepping down at President Trump's request. According to American media, Trump is considering former New Jersey governor and candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2019 presidential election Chris Christie to replace Sessions as the head of the Justice Department.
