Trump tightens asylum policy at US-Mexico border

The administration of United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday executive actions to restrict asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border amid controversy surrounding the migrant caravan from Central America. The new rule bars aliens who cross the southern border illegally from seeking asylum in the US.

Additionally, asylum seekers will now have to make a claim at a port of entry and wait there for their case to be solved instead of being released in the US until a hearing. Under the previous rules, "any alien who is physically present" in the country could apply for asylum within a year of arriving. Trump said earlier he wants undocumented immigrants to be kept in detention at the border until their cases are heard.
