Trump urges NATO members to pay 2% GDP 'immediately'

United States Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his dissatisfaction with NATO members, urging them to pay 2% of their GDP towards the organization's defense spending. The president added that the payments should be made "immediately" as opposed to the 2925 deadline.

Trump tweeted: "What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy? Why are their only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment? The U.S. is paying for Europe’s protection, then loses billions on Trade. Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025."

Meanwhile, the alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that 8 members of NATO committed to spending 2% of their GDP on defense this year, while the majority agreed to reach the 2% target by 2024.
