Trump withholds further sanctions on Russia - report

United States President Donald Trump plans to withhold any further sanctions on Russia, rolling back the previous announcement by the US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Washington Post reported on Monday, citing unnamed administration officials.

New punitive measures were meant as a response to Moscow's actions in Syria, namely its support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad and allegedly enabling him to use chemical weapons against rebels and civilians, Haley said on Sunday. However, Trump hasn't yet authorized the sanctions and sources say that it's "unlikely" Trump would approve them, unless Russia provokes them with another significant move.

The sources said that the administration considers Haley's statements "an error that needs to be mopped up." According to a Russian Foreign Ministry official, Russian Embassy in Washington was notified on Monday that there will be no further sanctions introduced.

The White House released an official statement on Monday saying that additional sanctions are still being considered, and that the "decision will be made in the near future."
