Turkey announces state of emergency to end next week

Turkey's presidential spokesman announced on Friday that the country's government will end the state of emergency on July 18. Ankara introduced the state of emergency in July 2016 in response to the failed military coup which attempted to overthrow the regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The decision to end the two-year-long state of emergency comes shortly after Erdogan was sworn in as the country's president once again after his victory in the snap presidential election in June. His new mandate comes with increased presidential powers as his party's proposals for 18 amendments, including abolishing the position of prime minister, to the Turkish constitution were approved in a referendum last year.
