US, China start new round of trade negotiations

The United States and China started a new round of trade negotiations this week, China's Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

The talks began with a phone call between US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He which focused on discussions about agricultural purchases, as well as potential changes to fundamental Chinese economic policies.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to pause the ongoing trade war between their two countries for 90 days and focus on negotiations. Both sides expressed confidence a trade agreement will be reached within the 90-day period but Trump hinted the talks could be extended as the US wants either a "real deal" or no deal at all.
