US retail sales up 0.4% in December

Seasonally adjusted advance estimates of retail and food services sales for December in the United States increased 0.4% to $495.4 billion compared to the previous month, the US Census Bureau said in a report released on Friday.

On an annual basis, retail and food services were up 5.4%. Meanwhile, total sales for the October to December 2017 period rose 5.5% from the same period a year ago. The October to November percent change was revised upwards from an increase of 0.8% to 0.9%.

Nonstore retailers were up 12.7% year over year, while building materials and garden equipment and supplies dealers rose 9.9% compared to the same period the previous year.
