Wall Street opens lower on trade talks uncertainty

Markets in the United States started the trading session on Thursday lower as investors digested the news about the latest round of trade talks with China that lasted three days. In a vague statement earlier in the day, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce noted that the two sides did make progress on structural issues, such as forced technology transfer and intellectual property rights, but failed to offer details on what was agreed upon. Meanwhile, the US Department of Labor reported a decrease of 17,000 in initial jobless claims in the last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index opened 0.51% in the red. 3M declined 1.31%, similar to DowDupont and Walmart. The Nasdaq 100 decreased 0.75% at the opening bell as American Airlines dove 10.70%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.55%, dragged down by Macy's plunge of 18%.

The euro lost 0.26% against the dollar, changing hands for $1.15247 at 9:32 am ET.
